Chelsea boots for men

A Chelsea boot built the way we build vellies: full-grain leather, twin elastic gussets, hand-stitched to a welt so the sole comes off and a new one goes on. No laces, no glue, no landfill at the end of it.

How ours is built

  • Full-grain, vegetable-tanned upper. The outer surface of the hide is left intact, so it patinas instead of flaking.
  • Twin elastic gussets and a leather pull tab. On without laces, and it holds the ankle rather than gaping as the boot ages.
  • Hand-stitched welt. The sole is stitched, not glued, so it can be replaced. This is the difference between a boot you keep and a boot you throw away.
  • Unlined. Comfortable barefoot and in heat, and it moulds to your foot in about a week.

Chelsea boot questions

What is a Chelsea boot?

A Chelsea boot is an ankle-height boot with elastic panels, called gussets, set into each side instead of laces or buckles, usually with a loop or tab at the heel to pull it on. The design dates to the 1830s and was popularised in London. The elastic is what defines it: it lets the boot pull on easily while still gripping the ankle.

What is the difference between a Chelsea boot and a vellie?

A vellie, or veldskoen, is defined by its construction: unlined full-grain leather stitched to a replaceable sole. A Chelsea boot is defined by its shape: ankle height with elastic side gussets. They are not mutually exclusive, and ours is both. It is a Chelsea boot in silhouette and a vellie in the way it is cut, stitched and repaired.

How long do leather Chelsea boots last?

It depends entirely on how they were built. A glued Chelsea boot comes apart at the sole long before the leather is finished, which is why cheap pairs feel disposable. Ours is stitched to a welt, so the sole stays put and the full-grain upper softens into your foot rather than cracking. Worn a few times a week and fed with a neutral balm now and then, a pair lasts years.

Do Chelsea boots stretch?

The leather does and the elastic does not, or at least not usefully. A full-grain upper moulds to your foot over about a week of wear. The gussets keep their tension far longer than that, which is what stops a Chelsea boot gaping at the ankle as it ages. Buy for a snug fit across the instep rather than sizing up for comfort.

What do you wear Chelsea boots with?

They sit between a shoe and a boot, which is most of their appeal. Chocolate or black works with chinos, denim and suiting. Tan and oxblood read more casual and suit denim and shorts in the South African summer. Because ours are unlined, they are comfortable in heat where a lined boot is not.

Chelsea boots for women

We make the same boot on a narrower women’s last: The Fynbos, from R2 450. Same full-grain upper, same elastic gussets, same hand-stitched welt, in sizes 3 to 8. See all vellies for women.

More from the range

If you want the ankle height without the elastic, the chukka in vellies for men is the closest cousin. For the traditional low cut, start with the classic veldskoen. Not sure of your size? Our shoes are UK sizes, and size swaps are simple.
